Our old farmhouse has this drabby covered front patio, topped with a balcony that is unfortunately unsafe for use. (Don’t worry, we have big plans for that in the future). But for right now, I decided that my front porch wasn’t as welcoming as I’d envisioned it to be. We don’t have the funds to fully revamp this space just yet, as we are focused on other projects around the house but I wanted to add some curb appeal since we are lacking in the landscaping area.
Our small front porch didn’t need much, but it did need a focal point. Some kind of backdrop to catch your attention. At first I considered an extra-large wreath that I would switch out for every season. Turns out, those are harder to come by and expensive to purchase, even if you were to do-it-yourself. I knew it needed to be simple, inexpensive and I really wanted to honor the original design of our Victorian Farmhouse.
One design feature that I absolutely LOVE and our home lacks, is arches. I started considering the idea of hanging half of an old windmill above the couch or maybe large arched window frames, but again sourcing such a large and authentic pieces is expensive and these ideas aren’t original.
I start browsing Pinterest and social media for inspiration and noticed everyone is getting into vines, growing jasmine on their fences and homes with trellises and opted to see if I could create this look without committing to actually growing something on the side of my house.
Turns out, you can! And I was able to find my materials for under $200!
These arched trellises were the PERFECT find! Made of real willow sticks and are light enough to hang against our siding using these siding hooks. I bought two different sizes of these trellises, 3 larger ones and 2 smaller ones.
I decided to hang them in descending order, using the 3 larger panels as my main backdrop and finishing the design with the two smaller panels on the ends.
Then it was time to add the faux vines.
I chose to cut each vine to size and weave them in two different layers. First, wrapping each vine around every other branch in the same direction. As shown below.
Once the first layer was complete, I then cut each vine to size and weaved them in the opposite direction to create a diamond pattern.

All in all this project took me about an hour and a half to complete, but keep in mind I was also pausing to take photos and videos of each step along the way!
I’m so happy with how it turned out. This backdrop added so much interest and charm to this drabby old porch and we are finding ourselves spending more time out front than we ever have before.
